You Have Been In A Car Wreck. Now What?

Road Accident

It can happen to anyone

It is bound to happen to almost everyone at some time.  As a personal injury attorney in Myrtle Beach, I know from years of experience that your  ability to be compensated for your injuries can be greatly affected by how you handle those first few minutes after an accident.

Steps on what to do if you’re in an accident

  1. STOP: Stop, if it is safe, and take a minute to make sure that you and your passengers are safe and secure.Roger-Smith-CEO-AIL-Blog-Take-Care-of-Yourself-American-Income-Life
  2. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF: If you are seriously injured, STAY WHERE YOU ARE, and call for help if possible. Wait for help to arrive.
  3. LICENSE AND INFORMATION PLEASE: If you are able, get your license and insurance information and exit your vehicle.
  4. CHECK ON OTHERS:  Approach the other vehicles involved and check on the occupants of those vehicles.
  5. CALL THE POLICE: Contact the police.
  6. TAKE SOME PICTURES:  Take a moment to assess the scene.  Use your cell phone to take pictures of the accident scene, the damage, and the vehicles involved.670px-Take-Action-After-a-Car-Accident-Step-5
  7. MOVE YOUR VEHICLE (yes I said move it):  Generally you are much safer if you move your vehicle out of traffic and safely to the side of the road.  Do not leave the accident scene just move your vehicle out of harms way turn on your lights and flashers.
  8. DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT: Get the names, addresses, and phone numbers of any witnesses.  Start with the people who were not involved.  Those people will not appear on any accident forms or reports and are likely to disappear and never be heard from again.  Those people can be the most important witnesses for you.
  9. CALL YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY:  In South Carolina the police will give you a form known as an FR-10 Form.  This is not an accident report it is notice of accident that must be filed with your insurance company within 30 days, even if the accident was not your fault.  Failure to submit the FR-10 Form can result in you losing your license.
